What is Accelerated Mobile Pages?
Google has been pushing a new concept called Accelerated Mobile Pages. The Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project is an open source initiative that came out of discussions that Google had between publishers and technology companies about the need to improve the mobile browsing experience.
Why are Accelerated Mobile Pages important?
Today, the expectation is that content should load quickly and be easy to explore. However today content can take several seconds to load. As a result the user may potentially abandon the page before it fully loads.
The mobile web is slow for a lot of people in fact, the majority of the people on the web are on mobile devices, often through 2G or 3G connections. To make pages load instantly, AMP restricts what you can do in HTML pages. AMP is very much a function over form project. Fancy design is stripped out in favor of speed.
Speed matters and instant is the ideal. Research shows that the bounce rate, the rate people will leave a site, your can be as high as 58% for web pages that take ten seconds or more to load. Using the AMP format will make it far more compelling for people to consume and engage with more mobile content.
AMP pages look like a very stripped down version of normal web pages, but do contain all the important content. Not all ads or analytics will work with AMP. All the “fluff” of your pages is stripped in AMP, including the read more links you might have built into your theme etc.
The potential for AMP is that It will allow content to appear quickly across all platforms and apps, which can lead to more revenue via ads and subscription.
Accelerated Mobile Pages Wordpress Plugin
The Wordpress team has followed the development of AMP and has worked on implementing it. as of right now any website on wordpress.com is AMP compatible. They have also released a new plugin available here for anyone hosting their own site.
The guys over at Yoast SEO have discovered that the plugin uses less than optimal metadata. The have created a new plugin that glues Yoast SEO to the new AMP plugin that is called appropriately, Glue.
