Wordpress Version 4.9.6 has been released to the public. While normally this would be considered a minor update it is actually a major one. The release is meant to comply with the new European Commission Law The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). According to the Official Wordpress site,
“The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect on May 25. The GDPR requires companies and site owners to be transparent about how they collect, use, and share personal data. It also gives individuals more access and choice when it comes to how their own personal data is collected, used, and shared. It’s important to understand that while the GDPR is a European regulation, its requirements apply to all sites and online businesses that collect, store, and process personal data about EU residents no matter where the business is located.”
For now the 4.9.6 update is not updating automatically. Wordpress.org stating.
“Automatic updates haven’t been turned on yet. The core team is watching the results of over 1 million manual ones and will turn on the automatic updates in the very near future, assuming nothing bad is detected.”
This release has more updates than a normal “minor” release. As a result it may break current WordPress websites so we recommend that you disable automatic updates for the time being.
